BIO

Luay Eljamal Headshot 2 - Copy.png

I am a theatre artist and arts & culture manager living and working in Edmonton, Canada with a Master of Arts in Contemporary Performance Making (Brunel University London), a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education in Drama & Communications Technology (University of Alberta) and a certificate in Project Management (University of California, Irvine). To date, I have worked in Canada, Scotland, and England.

As a writer and director, I approach performance-creation from a digital standpoint. I am very interested in how sound and projection can influence theatre and have developed a directing style which marries digital technology with live performance on stage. In 2010, I directed The Insanity of Mary Girard which won 6 provincial awards including “Outstanding Directing”, “Outstanding Ensemble” and “Outstanding Sound Design”. Additional directing credits include: Misery (Keyano Theatre), Sexy Laundry (Keyano Theatre, Canada), Seussical, the Musical (University of Alberta, Canada),  Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (University of Alberta, Canada), Proud (Finborough Theatre, UK), and Freeing Heaven’s Secrets—a sound art play which was shortlisted for a 2016 DBACE award in London, and saw its first public performance in Fort McMurray 2019.

As a Freelance Audiovisual Designer, I produce videos, projections, sound effects and music compositions for various artistic projects. Recent projects include Misery (Keyano Theatre), Quarter Life Crisis (OvalHouse & Underbelly Edinburgh Fringe 2017, UK), Lottery (The Pleasance London, UK), Proud (Finborough Theatre, UK) and The Slave (Tristan Bates Theatre, UK), as well as the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (the Buffys).

In 2019, I founded Symmetree Theatrewhich aims to share stories that empower marginalized members of our society.

I also work as Arts Development Consultant on Indigenous Arts and Theatre grants for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
